I use Linux Mint but I hear that this is a problem throughout
all Linux distros. If you want to download a program direct from
a site and not through Software Manager it is grief for non experts.
You unpack the download and wind up with hundreds of folders
and files and have no idea what to do with them. There is nothing
to even suggest where to start. No .exe files like windows and no
file names that give a clue , like install , setup etc. Sometimes
there is a 'readme' and you enter the terminal script and it installs but
who knows where, and who knows how to run it when you want.
It just disappears in the bowels of Linux.

Even though I have been playing with computers since DOS days
I am lost and can find nothing on this in any search.

Please - someone write an article. Mint has dropped the ball.
I post on their forum and wind up posting the answer myself a week later.

    Thanks.

programs/apps in the repository have been optimised for use in linux, much like you can't download/install mac version on windows... btw, mint isn't going to endorse it because of the potential to break the o/s by using non-optimised / untested / unproven programs, as well as a security risk...

Thanks Bob and Blaster - I chose uGet download manager because it was in the repository,
and used that, which after extraction got me back to the same place I was before,
ie. lots of folders and files and .paks in Archive Mgr.
Entered the install script as sudo that was given in the README file and it ran in terminal,
so presumably it installed (as before) but I don't see it anywhere.
Where would I find the program to open it ? Its not showing in Menu.

Edit: from your link- Thats me they're talking about !

" You can also manually install Linux software that has no installer at all
(mostly .tar.gz packages). But that's usually an awful job and definitely
    not suitable for beginners."
" Because you are installing as root, this is why you must know that the source of the file is trustworthy."

I dont think the file is trustworthy so I am going to leave it.
    Thanks

Maybe Brad.w can pass along what he finds if he writes his article.

Possibly you can search the whole HD by date-modified to find all of the newly installed files. I just do not know Linux.

Blaster possibly you could download the same stuff as he does - if you have Linux - and figure it out.

Cant find it anywhere -Mint 18.1 is very minimalist-no 'recently used' etc.
Maybe it was not installing but 'compiling' or something- Whole lot of text/script
was running in terminal and when it stopped nothing. I'm way out of my depth on this.
I do want to learn how to install stuff manually- repository copy out of date, stuff not popular enough
to be included in repository etc. .. Will come back to it another time.
Gonna look for some Linux 101 tutorials.
    Preciate your help.
