My AVG anti-virus shows a trojan (.exe) in my registry. I read that an virus can not exist just in the registry. Should I remove it and how do I tell if it's a false positive? Using XP SP2.

    Viruses DO make registry entries.

    It's generic trojan located in Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5603\a0011547.exe.

Clean out your temp folders and then run HijackThis. Let's just use know tools before editing the registry directly. If know tools fail then you can go ahead and delete that key from the registry.

More info: It's a trojan generic21.INJ if that makes any sense.
Don't see anything unusual after running Hijackthis but I'm not an expert. Don't know what "know tools" is. Appreciate your help.

Whoa, you've got a lot of stuff running on that machine, I'd not be surprised if it's slow. Anyway, the only really suspicious entry is this:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: SearchHook Class - {BC86E1AB-EDA5-4059-938F-CE307B0C6F0A} - C:\Program Files\DeviceVM\Browser Configuration Utility\AddressBarSearch.dll

You've got lots of Java stuff running, and you've got file sharing programs: I'd bet dollars against donuts that that's how you got the virus.

    This is true.

Go to your start up items and turn off any p2p programs and all unnecessary programs. That isn't good as it leaves ports open for intruders and like Nuclear said that is probably how you got infected.

Another good program to scan with is
    Malwarebytes Anti-malware - Download

    Update its definitions.

    Run Full Scan.

    Post logs.
