    Hi All:

On Google I found a few sites that say "Free Windows XP Pro OS Download"

Is this for real? I started through the download just to see if it was true, but they wanted too much information from me, so I quit.

I have a friend that needs an OS disk, he bought a computer without getting a setup disk for WinXP PRO, he's got problems and needs to reinstall.

I have the registered WinXP PRO Upgrade, but I told him we can't use it because it's registered to me.

Anyway, just thought I'd ask if anyone knew anything about those Free OS downloads.

Thanks ahead of time for your input.

Does he have a COA sticker? If so, what does it say? (No, don't post the key, just what else it says)

Now, what's the brand and model of this computer? If it's a name brand, I'm betting it can be reloaded from the recovery partition.

I googled "Free Windows XP Pro OS Download" and got a lot of hits. None of of them actually took me to a site to download the OS.

Post a link to this site. I'm betting it's not the OS you'll be downloading. I was taken to everything but the OS.

    Hi glc:

There is a sticker on the back that has the Product Key. It says Genuine Microsoft, Cirtificate Of Authenticity.

The computer is an IBM NetVista 6792.

How do you reloaded from the recovery partition?

    Press F11 immediately on bootup.

    Those sites are illegal.

What VERSION does the COA sticker say? XP Home, XP Pro, or XP MCE?

    Hi glc:

    What does COA stand for?

WinXP Pro is what it's running now.

I'll find out if the sticker gives the OS version.

I think F11 takes us into the setup.

    Thanks,

The sticker says Win 2000 pro 1-CPU.

One sticker on the front says, designed for WinXP.

Looks like someone upgraded to WinXP PRO, I guess in that case, the Key might not work?

The COA is Certificate Of Authenticity. It's that MS label on the side that contains the product key. If your key is for Win 2K and it was running XP Pro, it was either upgraded or running a pirated (probably corporate) copy.

F11 will probably put Win 2000 back on it - if the recovery partition is even there. Sorry, but your friend is going to have to buy XP if he doesn't have the disk and the COA for it.

    Thanks glc & Panama Red:

I'll see if he wants to try the F11, or wait till he buys an XP disk.

    Thanks for the input,
