Disadvantage of external hard drive?

    almost every price for external hard drives i have seen are cheaper than the internal hard drives. is the any disadvantage to using a external. Im talking about no even having internal hard drives.

    EDIT- i may be wrong i wasn't comparing brands.

    Actually an external hard drive will be more expensive than the same hard drive as an internal drive. I don't know for sure if you can use just an external HD without an internal one, but I doubt it.

    I dont think you can boot from an external HD

    You cannot install an operating system on an external harddrive (well you can try, but it wont boot from it:D) because the HD is connect via USB and not connected to the IDE/SATA port on the motherboard.

    I use my WD external for storage and such (mainly movies and music - all of which I own). Or if i need to some spring cleaning, I'll transfer important files to there and reinstall the OS to clean all the junk out.

    Actually I *think* on some systems you might be able to boot from a USB device. I've got an option on mine for that. But for obvious reasons, it's not really a good idea. Imagine accidentally unplugging the hard drive.

    I agree - sounds like a bad idea. Either the USB cable unplugs or the power cable falls out of the outlet - Both of which happen frequently to mine.

    you can definently boot from usb on some systems
    dont know anyone that does it though
