DVD-R drive problem

I just bought a new LG multi dvd writer, and installed it as the slave to my LG CD burner (which works properly). The dvd writer shows up in My Computer, and plays dvd's fine. However, whenever I try to burn anything onto a dvd, I can't do it. In every program I've tried, changing the drive used form the CD to dvd drive causes my computer to reset a few seconds after comfirming. By the way, I'm using Windows XP. Anyone have any ideas on how to solve this problem?

What burning software are you trying to use? If you are trying to use the software that came with your CD-R, it probably will not work - you need to use the software that came with the DVD-R or buy a retail version of something that will work with all drives. The software that comes with most CD-R and DVD-R drives will only work with the drive it came with.

Thats' part of what has me puzzled. I've tried a number of different programs, including the one that came with the dvd burner (B's recorder, I think). All of them default to the cd writer, and cause the system to restart when I try to change to the dvd burner. Any other ideas?

Put the dvdwriter on master and the cdwriter on slave. Or better yet, disconnect the cdwriter entirely, the dvd writer will write cd's too. In any case, try this and tell us if it improves things.

Alright, I set the dvd drive as the master and removed the cd drive completely. Went back and re-installed the dvd burning program that came with the burner, and ran it. The same thing happened again, except this time the program loaded, stayed on about 10 seconds, and then the computer restarted. I assume its because it now detects the dvd as the default and causes the problem right away, instead of after I change drives. Either way, I'm completely stumped. Any other ideas?

Look for any error messages in the Application and System log files (Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Log Viewer) regarding this drive. Look especially at the errors just before your PC started booting up again (look at the time), and any errors regarding ATAPI. There might be a clue to what's going on here.

Go into control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery - and uncheck restart on error. Next time it should give you a BSOD instead of rebooting - and the first few lines should be your clue what's causing it - research the verbage.

If you still have trouble after all of that, try setting both drives to cable select. Then download DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink (both free).

I just installed a new Pioneer DVD burner last week and this is the way mine is configured. XP automatically recognises whatever is inserted in the drive and asks if you want to decrypt.

I tried the advice given above and didn't find an error message similar to the one described. However, when I unchecked the restart command, I received the following blue screen message instead of the restart:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: dvd_2k.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

...various help and conact info...

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x00000050 (0xA9D2B000, 0x00000000, 0xF77773A6, 0x00000000)

*** dvd_2k.sys - Address F77773A6 base at F7777000, DateStamp 3d137859

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.

I'm going to try and research the error, but if anyone here has any ideas or answers, I'd appreciate the help. Thanks.

Windows 2000 & XP] When I try to launch B's Recorder GOLD7, the computer freezes and I get a blue screen with an error message that says something is wrong with the "dvd_2k.sys" file.

The "dvd_2k.sys" file may be running and causing a blue screen to appear when launching B's Recorder GOLD7. An error message similar to the one below may appear.

---Error example---
dvd_2k.sys Pagefault in nonpage area
stop:0x00000050(0xF2B5D000,0x00000000,0xF78AF3A6,0x00000000)
dvd_2k.sys address F78AF3A6 base at F78AF000, Datestamp
3d48e12a
------------------------

This file is included in third-party writing software, e.g. Roxio DirectCD. Use the following method to solve the problem.

1. If you have other third-party writing software installed on your computer, uninstall all of them.
2. After you have uninstalled them, check that the drivers have been deleted properly. First, Open "Folder Options" in the "Control Panel".
3. Enable the "Show hidden files and folders" option under the "View" tab.
4. Search for the "dvd_2k.sys" file.
5. Once you have found the file, right click on the file name and select "Rename" from the contextual pop-up menu.
6. Put a "1" after the file name, e.g. "dvd_2k.sys1".
7. Restart Windows. The file should not be read at startup and you should be able to launch the B's Recorder GOLD7 without any problems.
