Ubuntu 9.10 fail to boot in external USB HDD

has anyone install Ubuntu 9.10 on a USB hard drive?
-for me:
after finishing the installation on the external HDD, rebooting the system gets me to a

"grub-rescue>" prompt, with message "no such partition"
typing in " ls" displays:
"(hd0), (hd0,1), (fd0), (fd0,1) , no such device"

I think the "no such device" is my USB drive.
(hd0) (hd0,1) should be the primary IDE channels

the Motherboard can boot from USB device__done it with USB thumb drive before.

can not do "set root=device" because there is no such device.

lastly, if I take the hard drive out of the external-enclosure and connect it to one of the sata channel/slots in the MB , the computer boots into Ubuntu 9.10 sucessfully....hmm

Just a thought, but have you enabled USB legacy in the BIOS?

odd,
I install 9.10 in an EIDE drive-enclosure an hour ago and it boot up fine...
pure weirdness,
same system, only different enclosure with different type of HDD( Eide vs Sata).
could it be the enclosure circuit? hmmm
