EMM386.EXE error msg- Caldera DR-DOS

" The system memory manager (EMM386.EXE) has detected an error caused by a fault in one of the device drivers or programs loaded in the system"

This started with frequent auto shutdowns and rebootings, then blue screen.
Its a 1 year old Lenovo tower with XP.

I wiped the disk with Dariks and reinstalled using Lenovos restore CD.
Unbelievably this error message still comes up - last time was when I tried
to boot with a HDD stress test on CD. (It has since passed all stress tests)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831515 says this is a corrupt file and instructs to
use a boot floppy and then edit config.sys .... But

1st I have no floppy drive and secondly I would need to know where the Caldera DR-DOS
folder is located ( search comes back with zero)

What can I do ?

Thanks!

Your best bet is to see what is in config.sys and if nothing more than the emm file (and possibly himem.sys) then delete config.sys or clear it out to a zero length.

The capabilities made available by emm are built into XP.

XP doesn't use the Config.sys file.
You can tweak the Config.NT file for older DOS apps...

What are you doing/what apps etc are you using when you get this error?

If it was -> last time was when I tried to boot with a HDD stress test on CD.
Then don't use thay app....If you want to test the hard drive - get the software from the drive makers web site.

The hard drive test that gave the error was from Hitachi for the
Hitachi on the machine. Thats the only time I've seen the error msg
since I wiped the drive and reinstalled XP.

Can you give me a path to look in config.sys to see whats in there,
and how to delete it ? ( Why did I throw away my DOS book ?)

I don't want this to come back on them in the future, even though it has only
showed up the one time since the reinstall.

Thanks

EDIT: Did a search for EMM386.EXE.... nothing found.

When you are booting with the Hitachi DFT, it's using DR-DOS on the CD with its own config files. This error has nothing to do with your Windows installation, it's either a compatibility issue between DR-DOS and your hardware, or you have defective hardware. It could also be a corrupt CD.

Well I dont know where I am. I ran Sisoft Sandra and most of the hardware
exceeded their benchmark standards, the rest did not fall much below.
So I don't know about defective hardware. I was hoping the test would show some
defect but they didn't. I guess youre all saying- leave it a while and if it
doesnt reappear - forget it. This thing was downgraded from Vista to XP
with Lenovos official downgrade pack so maybe thats where the corruption
came from.

Cheers

Were you having some sort of issue that motivated you to run the testing software?
