Using USB Port to cable modem, ethernet cable from modem to wireless router

Will that work or do I need to run Ethernet cable from PC to Motorola Cable Modem then ethernet cable to Netgear Wireless Router?
Im getting a "No Router detected" when going thru the set up.

I am having to use the USB connection to my modem from my original PC where my modem is located

Thanks

You need to run an ethernet cable from the modem to your router, then everything else plugs into your router with an ethernet cable. DO NO directly connect your computer to your modem. You may need to power cycle your modem if it's locked onto your computer's MAC address.

Ooops I meant to say Netgear wireless Router....Sorry
Thanks Matt,
See my prob is that my ethernet plug doesnt work on my PC for some reason......I have Charter Cable and spent an hour on the phone and got no where..... Ive searched relentlessly on microsoft and Dell websites and cant get any help on finding out whats wrong with my ethernet slot, when I hook it there I lose my internet connection.
Is ther some diagnostic or test I can run to see if I have a problen with it?
Also the ethernet card must be good because it all works through the USB port, is that correct?.
Thanks

USB and ethernet are completely separate, so the USB working proves nothing about your ethernet. What exactly happens when your ethernet on the computer is hooked up? Try this for me. Make sure you have the modem connected to the WAN port of the router with ethernet, and nothing else besides the power and coax/phone line (depending on if it's cable or DSL) connected to the modem. Connect your computer to the router with ethernet, and nothing else, no USB. Then, unplug the modem, wait about 30 seconds, and plug it back in again. Wait a few minutes for all the lights to get to their normal state. Then, unplug your router, wait about 30 seconds, and plug it back in again. Wait a few minutes for it to complete it's startup. Then, reboot your computer. Check and see if the internet works on it. If you're still having problems, open a command prompt (Start, run... type in cmd and click ok) and type in ipconfig /all. Paste the results of that command here so we can get a better idea of what's going on.
