Hard drive woes

Ok, so a friend of mine is having trouble with his laptop. He gets it tested at Best Buy and they tell him it has a bad sector. I order a new hard drive and install it and put the OS and drivers back on it. After about a month the computer becomes really slow. Trying to click something in an open window results in the "computer is not responding" message at the top of the window. I finally wiped the computer and reinstalled Vista and the drivers and such. After a few times of installing and restarts the laptop is getting slow as molasses again. I dont think this is a virus since I wiped the system. Im starting to wonder if maybe I should replace the hard drive again?
I would appreciate any help or suggestions, thanks.

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
Download the hdd diagnostics from the manufacturers site. All but Toshiba have dedicated software that you can download for free and test the hdd.

When you installed the OS did you install the chipset and video card drivers?
