Picture and Fax Viewer
Hi All:
First of all I don't like anything about Picture and Fax Viewer, it's annoying to me and I tried to remove it using the following ...
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/SystemFileAssociations/image/ShellEx /ContextMenuHandlers
Delete the Folder ShellImagePreview under ContextMenuHandlers.
And ...
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Click "Tools"
3. Click "Folder Options"
4. Click "File types"
5. Choose .gif
6. Click "Advance">remove listed actions to disassociate Windows Picture And Fax Viewer from all files with this extension. Repeat the above steps for .tiff, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, and any other file extensions that are associated with Windows Picture And Fax Viewer.
The above didn't get rid of it, but if I open a folder where I have jpeg, gif, bmp and png files and highlight them and click Open With, Choose Program, Check the box that says "Always Open The Selected Program To Open This Kind Of File", that folder will stay the way I set it and all the pictures that I click will open in the program that I set it to.
But I can't go through hundreds of folders and thousands of pictures to make them open like I want them to open, it would take me weeks at this rate.
Hope you can help me get rid of this Picture and Fax Viewer once and for all !!!
Your help will be very much appreciated, and thanks ahead of time.

If you set the Always Open With for a jpeg - ALL JPEG's in ALL folders will then open with your new choice.

I know, I stated that above, but I have thousands of pictures and hundreds of folders that contain them.
I want to GET RID of that Picture and Fax Viewer so I won't have to spend hours, weeks, and months doing them one at a time.
Also I tried the following ...
Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\ {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}\ shellex.
Delete the MayChangeDefaultMenu key.
Close the Registry Editor when you're done; the change will take effect immediately.
It didn't work either.

You are TOTALLY missing what Steve is telling you...........................................
Do the OPEN WITH thing with ONE FILE of each extension at a time and check the ALWAYS USE box. You shouldn't have to mess with more than 5 files or so that way. Once you do it with ONE .JPG, ALL .JPG's will now open with whatever you chose. Repeat for .PNG, .GIF, etc.
Another way to do it is from within the program YOU want to use, there should be a way in its preferences to take over defaults. This is one of the VERY FIRST things I do to a XP box, I install Irfanview and tell it to become the default for ALL IMAGES.

Hi glc:
Maybe I'm not presenting my problem the right way, When I open a folder that contains jpeg files it opens with Picture and Fax Viewer, if I select one of the pictures and click "Open With" and then check the box that says "Always Open The Selected Program To Open This Kind Of File", close the folder, then reopen it, it opens with Picture and Fax Viewer, but if I select all the jpeg files and and do the above procedure it corrects the problem only for that folder, from then on that folder will open in explorer showing a thumbnail of each picture.
But then I would have to do that to every folder I have. I was hoping we could get rid of Picture and Fax Viewer completely.
The program that I want to use is Windows Explorer.
I tried Irfanview, but didn't care for it.

So what program do you want to use to view JPGs? Nearly every program has an option of having it open as a default.

The open with trick should work with all files on the hard drive.

Hi Statica:
I wany JPG's, GIF's to open with Windows Explorer, BMP's to open with MS Paint.
Hi EzyStvy:
Yes that does work, but my problem is, when you open a folder, all the pictures in that folder are shown with Picture and Fax Viewer, I want my folders to open with Windows Explorer.
If I do the open with trick for every picture file in a folder, then that folder will open with Windows Explorer from now on.
I was hoping we could get rid of Picture and Fax Viewer so that I wouldn't have to do the open with trick on every folder that I have in my computer.
That would take me months to get every folder corrected.

Windows Explorer is not an image viewer. It is not capable of directly opening any image files, the only thing it can do is operate in thumbnail mode in your pictures folders. You have to choose an image viewer. Paint can open all common image files these days - jpegs, gif, bmp, tiff.

That's all I want, the pictures to open in Windows Explorer with the thumbnails, I know it's not an image viewer, sorry if I led you to think that I thought it was.
I also know that I can open most of my images in MS Paint, but I only use MS Paint for BMP's and GIF's rework.
I just wanted to get rid of my folders opening with Picture and Fax Viewer.
If it can't be done, I guess we can end this Thread.
Sorry this turned to be so difficult for me to explain, I thought it would be an easy fix.
Anyway, I want to thank you all for your input !!!

I found a solution, it was right under my nose, don't have to get gid of Picture and Fax Viewer.
On each folder click Properties, Customize Tab, select Pictures (best for many files), check the box that says "Also Apply This Template To All Subfolders".
For example, I applied this to a folder that had 25 subfolders in it, and this corrected every folder, they all open in Explorer showing the thumbnails.
I can live with this, I've already done about a third of the folders in my computer.
I won't have to fool with that Picture and Fax Viewer any more, but if by chance it shows up somewhere, I know now how to get rid of it.
Again, thank you all.
