Aftermarket Charger doesn't work with Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop

The power cord/charger for my laptop quit working because it had a short. I bought a new one, iGo brand, which powers the laptop, but won't charge it. I understand from some research I've done on the net that Dell puts a chip in the battery to make it only charge with Dell chargers. Does anyone know a work around to make this charger work? Is there a way of removing this chip? I've gone into the Bios and there are no options for disabling this or modifying the power options in any way.

Call the manufacturer. Ask if they have heard of this. Also, if you can, try the aftermarket charger on a different Dell laptop to see what happens.

Take it back and buy an OEM charger.

I ran into the same problem last week, my niece broke the laptop adapter off, we had a targus adapter with an assortment of laptop adapters, found one that fit the Dell booted it up and received a warning screen that there wasn't a Dell 65amp power adapter connected to the laptop. So much for buying an adapter off the shelf.
