XP Won't start!
Hi my PC keeps rebooting, I was looking around to see if anyone else has this problem but no luck so here. When I start my computer it gets to the windows loading screen then restarted itself. Then comes to the Apologize windows asking how do I wanna start windows again, I hit Start Windows Normally but same thing happens. This time I try Safe Mode and it gets alittle further showing the XP loading screen but does not start. I picked all of the options there and its all the same results. I have off the loading screen so it shows what is going on in the background and it always stops at this line:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys I also notice that at this line the USB keyboard and Mouse go off meaning the lights then it goes to my custom XP loading screen and after 7secs it stops and for like 1sec I see a blue screen flash saying something like New hardware found...... it goes to fast to read what it says. Then it restarts again. So nothing works not even safe mode. Any ideas why? |
is this a new system your building or one that has been running fine then just started this problem ?
it could be: drivers and software for the hardware on the motherboard corrupt or missing. bad hardware bad ram bad power supply bad motherboard just to start with. |
there are several things it could be... but most of the time i've found when it's acting up like what you're mentioning it sounds like it could be a problem with the cpu overheating... try checking your tower for alot of dust buildup and blow it out good with some air... also clean the cpu fan and heatsink thouroughly make sure you unplug the power cord before attempting anything first though... see if that helps if not there are a few other things you can try... but for now try that....

CAUSE
This issue may occur if Windows XP tries to use an incompatible video driver during startup. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, disable the Agp440.sys service: IMPORTANT: You must know the administrator password to complete the following procedure. If you do not know the administrator password, contact your system administrator. After you complete this procedure, any video adapter driver you have installed will be disabled, and Windows XP will use default VGA drivers. 1. Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into the computer CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer from the CD-ROM. Note Some computers may require that you modify the basic input/output system (BIOS) settings before you can start the computer from a CD-ROM. For information about how to modify the BIOS, see your computer documentation. 2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to start the Recovery Console. 3. Press the number key that corresponds to the installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER. 4. Type the password for the administrator account of that installation, and then press ENTER. You receive a drive:WINDOWS> prompt, where drive is the drive on which Windows XP is installed. 5. Type listsvc, and then press ENTER. 6. Make sure that the Agp440 service is listed, and that the startup type is set to "Boot". 7. Press ESC. 8. Type disable agp440, and then press ENTER. 9. You receive a message that the registry setting for this service was found, and that its current startup state is "service_disabled". 10. Type exit, and then press ENTER. 11. If you are prompted to start in Safe mode or Normal mode, start in Normal mode. 12. Log on to your computer. Windows XP includes default video drivers that make it possible for your monitor to work. However, some features may not work as you expect with these default drivers. Update your video drivers periodically. To do so, visit your computer manufacturers Web site, and download the most recent drivers for your video adapter. |
Tried that, getting a message saying
The system registry does not appear to have an active ControlSet Key. The system registry may be damaged. If your system is currently not starting correctl, you can try restarting it with the Last Know Good configuration or you can try repairing the installation of windows using the setup program's repair and recovery options. The registry entry for the agp440 service cannot be located. Check that the name of the service is specified correctly. Also when I type C:\dir I get There is no Floppy disk or CD in the drive. And I am sure that is the drive XP is on. Does this mean my HD is bad? I hope not :( |
You can try Repair install you will losse SP-aks and updates but your data will be saved!
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm For HDD you can download diagnostic tool from manufacturers web-site!!! |
Ok I used the diagnostic tool for my HD. I got it working but now my graphic card is not working right, getting message from Device Manager under Display Adapters Saying this device could not start. (CODE 10) and under resources
This device isn't using any resources because it has a problem. I tried installing drives again but no luck. Does this mean that my graphic card has a problem? Also when running the diagnostic tool I got this: The Following Sectors MAY be damaged ------------------------------------ LBA: 78142304 STATUS: Write-reallocation SUCCESSFUL! USAGE: Used in the file: \$Bitmap If this is a directory, any contained files or subdirectories may be inaccessible. File Structure Test Result: Partition 1 (NTFS (63.4 GB) ) Result: Failed with critical Errors The following errors were found while scanning the volume: - One or more errors were found in the index - One or more errors were found in metadata file records - Other errors were found NOTE: Any report of possible errors in the file system tests are for informational purposes only. We suggest you should consider testing with the official file system diagnostic utilities for your operating system. Seagate is not able to assist with troubleshooting or reviewing file system test results. After a second run it fix the first part with bad sectors but the second part came up again. So I am not sure if its my HD or Graphic card that is the problem. |
If you have bad sectors, you may need to replace the hard drive.
Open a command prompt and type CHKDSK /R It will require a reboot and the check could take some time. After it's done, run the manufacturer's hard drive diags again, if you get an error code, replace the hard drive. |
Noooooooooooo!!! Not my hard drive :( . I am going to try that after work today. Hope everything is ok cause if not I am going to have to reinstall everything hours and hours of work. Oh well at least I can back up my stuff. Also I bought this HD a year ago OME, you think SegaGate will replace it if it is faulty?
|
you did activate the xp with MS right, if you neglected to do this it will stop working after a set time.

Code 10 If the device has a "FailReasonString" value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator places this registry string value there. If there is no "FailReasonString" in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed: This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10) Try upgrading the device drivers for this device. Solution button: Update Driver To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. For example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard. |
Hey here is an update I swap my 6800 with an 5200 to see what would happen. After putting in the 5200 the drivers installed and everything was fine under Device Manger. Then I took out the 5200 and put back the 6800, it went back to the same problem as before. When trying to update the drivers I keep getting an message
There was a problem installing this hardware NVIDA GeForce 6800GT An error occurred during the installtion of this device Access is denied. What does this mean? So the 5200 worked fine but not the 6800, is there anything I can do? Or is my graphic card damaged? Quick update I DL the latest drivers from NVIDIA website everything works fine now, there was a reason why I dont like the lastest drivers and never used it before but I cant remember why.... Anyway why wont XP take the old driver that came with the graphic card? |
