View Full Version : Samsung vs. LG optical drives

I need a new reader coz the one i got now is old and slow, so ive decided to go for a DVD reader (not burner) and have decided to get a Burner as well. To keep the case looking cool i wanna keep the drives the same brand, so everythign matches.
So ... which would be the better performer and what would you like in your case??
Samsung burner and dvd drive,
or LG burner and drive.
Samsung makes not very good optical drives, but LG's optical drives are good quality.
So between the two: Choose LG for both burner and reading drives.

I agree with RJ...between those choices, go with the LG.
Also consider Pioneer and Sony as these companies make good DVD players and DVD burners.

LG drives are rock solid. You will not be dissapointed by going with them. I would also take a look at lite-on if they are available to you.

I'm still a bit wishy washy on LG products as I have had some problems with them, but they are far superiour to Samsung opticals.

k thanks, i was gonna go with pioneer, but i cant find a normal burner by them, plus i heard from somewhere that Lite-On are loud. is that true??

...also, how r Asus drives?? seen quite a few of them around
Well that's a personal preference really. Two of my friends have LiteOn DVD drives and I don't find them loud. I do get annoying but all the nasty fans, I have 2 fans (cpu and gpu) and I hate the idea of adding a case fan coz of the noise. So I'd say you should find that out for yourself if it's loud for you or not.
Also Pioneer does not make CD burners, but you don't need to have both opticals from the same manufacturer.
Dunno about Asus opticals, never used them.

yeah i know that, but coz im gonna start moddin my case, it will look better if they were the same
Well the cd burner and dvd rom drive don't really look the same although they are from the same manufacturer.
The LiteOn CD burner looks a bit different than the LiteOn DVD ROM drive, for example.

thats why im leaning towards tha samsung, coz both look the same, but will different logo sorta things below the slot
Well, you prefer same-looking drives instead of quality drives ?
I suggest that you not do that, you will regret it.
LG's optical look different, too.
Maybe a combo drive would be a better choice for you.

k then, then what two would you suggest?
Well I'd say two PlexCombos (http://www.plextor.be/English/products/px320a.html) then you have 2 drives looking identical, 2 good quality drives, and 2 drives to read dvd and burn cd.
One of them would be enough, but if you need on-the-fly-burning you need a second drive.

Had this LG burner for about 2 years now. Runs fine.

LG drives are rock solid. I have fitted in excess of 60 drives to various systems (writers from the 8160b, 8240, 8320, 8400, 8481, 8520 & 8523. and the 8160 & 8161 DVD's and not one comeback yet.
Don't use their CD Rom's much as the Didital audio extraction is slow.
Use 5 at home
7 at business
