i have a windows xp machine that no longer boots after power failure
i am able to get into bios but the primary hard drive is labeled as strange characters
when the machine stops the following message appears:
NVIDIA Boot Agent 201.0440
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting NVIDIA Bood Agent.
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
Has my hard drive crashed?
I do not have the windows cd (someone else built the machine)

Yes, it does sound like the HD failed. To check out for sure, download the diagnostic utility from the maker of your hard drive. You might be able to slave the drive in an other computer to retrieve files that you may need.
If the drive is proven bad, get the CD for XP from the person/company that made the computer(if it was made for you, they owe you the XP cd)

Yea I am really sorry to say that but to me it also sounds like the harddrive might have failed. There is a chance its ok though in the case that the wires connecting to the motherboard might have burnt out or failed somehow. You should definately make sure.

If you cant find anyone who can lend you their computer for testing try to find a small computer store where you live so they'd check it for you.

Thank you for your replies.
I do believe it is the drive itself. I removed the drive (samsung 160gb) and placed in usb external drive and could not read.
I was unable to use the samsung utility (no floppy).
Is it possible to recover drive or at least the data on the drive?

Maybe. Try data recovery software. PC Inspector is free, Google it.
